OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH SS15 entitled "Moving Still" main premise is freezing a sense of motion.
Inspired by the repetitive and rambunctious nature of waves Virgil Abloh aimed to capture that energy and abstracting into the clothing of the season in numerous ways. The play on words itself too provide and oxymoron juxtaposition that prevailed in emotion for the garments.
As evident in paint splatter or the motion of military patches being thrown against a garment the concept manifests itself. Making the clothes a canvas for the artistic expression of the season.
The muse of the collection was based on a Baja surf story. Evident on cut-off denim shorts, tattered shirting, faded outerwear to create a sense of everyday wear. Floral prints utilised to reinforce the Oceanside nature of the collection. Even neoprene motorcycle jackets to tie in the theme of ocean living.
With the collection largely made in Italy and Europe the main goal is to transcend the street rationale and apply true design concept to graphic menswear using the best fabrics and techniques to communicate the brand identity.
As part of an ongoing series of installation art pieces by OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH the latest instalment entitled “INDUSTRIAL BY NATURE” further explores one of the brands principles of crashing natural textures with a manmade industrial process. This series of art exhibitions and ancillary projects is an expression of the brand itself; the spirit of the fashion label under the OFF-WHITE name.
An extension of the Spring-Summer collection entitled “Moving Still” in the
“INDUSTRIAL BY NATURE” exhibit is an immersive sensory installation that gives the notion of being on a beach using man made triggers. Misting fans, layered with sounds of the seaside, visual projections of the ocean and a mound of sand all together create a curated atmosphere that is an impression of the brand.
Artworks in the apparent form of litter are strewn about the sand. Entitled “Morning” the artworks are various Starbucks cups co-branded with the OFF-WHITE signature diagonal lines. Furthering the dialogue of the accidental convergence between nature and industry.
Throughout the fashion label a continuos balance between the mens and womens line is upheld replicating the powerhouse movements of youthful, current street culture along side sophisticated cuts and tailored silhouettes of the fashion elite.
In 2012, OFF-WHITE released PYREX VISION “The Youth Always Wins” as its initial work.
That work, done in conjunction with Art Director Young Man, depicted the culture at the time and put forth the notion of a "TEAM WITH NO SPORT.” In the medium of film that work is now on display at http://vimeo.com/55394267
